FMCG growth slows on the GST changeover, and once again it is the village, not the city, holding the line

Fast-moving consumer goods value growth eased to 12.9 per cent year-on-year in the September quarter from 13.9 per cent the quarter before, while volume growth softened to 5.4 per cent from 6 per cent, according to NielsenIQ data cited in an Anand Rathi Research note.

The slowdown traces mostly to the move to new GST rates, which forced pipeline corrections and destocking across several categories as the trade waited for prices to settle.

Underneath the dip, the familiar split held. Rural demand grew 7.7 per cent, close to double the 3.7 per cent recorded in towns and cities, marking the seventh straight quarter that the countryside has outpaced the metros.

A favourable monsoon, softer input costs and a low base in the second half are expected to support a recovery into next year.

For brands, the signal is steady rather than dramatic: the engine of consumption is still moving outward from the cities, and the temporary tax disruption masks a demand base that has not actually weakened.

Beverages become the growth engine as Tata and Dabur lean into premium and functional drinks

Tata Consumer Products reported about 20 per cent growth in its coffee portfolio and 23 per cent in ready-to-drink beverages, helped by premium formats and newer categories such as kombucha, matcha and electrolyte drinks.

Dabur's Real Activ hundred per cent juice range grew roughly 26 per cent, and its coconut water business more than doubled over the year.

India's beverage market is forecast to expand from about 17 billion dollars in FY24 to 30 billion by FY30. The pattern is consistent: where food volumes are flat, drinks are where premiumisation is finding room to run.

FMCG stocks lead the market as easing crude and a defensive rotation lift sentiment

On 10 June 2026, HUL rose about 2 per cent to ₹2,176, Nestlé India 1.9 per cent to ₹1,438 and ITC 1.7 per cent to ₹284.8, pushing the Nifty FMCG index up roughly 1.5 per cent to the top of the sectoral table on a day the broader market stayed subdued.

The move was driven by costs. Softer crude oil prices point to lower input and packaging bills, and investors read that as margin relief arriving before any volume recovery shows up in the numbers.

There was a rotation at work too. With global cues uncertain, money shifted into consumption defensives, the part of the market that tends to hold up when growth elsewhere looks shaky.

The caution is that this is a margin story. Cheaper inputs can lift profit even while shoppers buy the same or slightly less, so the rally rewards cost discipline more than it confirms a demand turn.

The question for the second half is whether lower input costs reach the shelf as sharper pricing and pack value, or simply settle as wider margins that never make it to the consumer.

Quick commerce settles into a hierarchy as Blinkit holds the lead and the category eyes 50 billion dollars

Blinkit leads India's quick commerce market with roughly a 46 per cent share, ahead of Swiggy Instamart at 24 per cent and Zepto at 22 per cent, on a network near 2,243 dark stores.

Zepto has edged past Instamart on order volume even as Blinkit keeps a clear lead in scale and profitability, just as Zepto prepares to list.

Industry estimates see the category maturing into a 50 billion dollar business with the shopper base doubling toward 70 million, and smaller cities accounting for close to a third of it — the next phase of growth is geographic, not metro.

IPL still commands the ad market even as television ratings soften

IPL 2026 drew advertising revenue in the range of 4,900 to 5,200 crore rupees, with quick commerce, AI platforms, financial services, consumer durables and paints among the biggest spending categories.

Nearly 70 per cent of viewers watched across both television and streaming, and more than 40 per cent followed at least seven matches a week.

The money is moving with the audience: brands are shifting incremental spend to digital and connected television for sharper targeting, with influencer activity around the tournament expected to reach about 700 crore rupees this year.

RETAIL MEDIA · 4 days ago

Retail media becomes the channel where Indian shoppers try new brands

Retail media spending in India is racing toward about 30,360 crore rupees in 2026, as e-commerce platforms turn their checkout pages into advertising real estate.

Roughly 88 per cent of shoppers say they are willing to use retail media to discover and try new brands, drawn by easy discovery and the trust of buying in context.

For consumer companies this reshapes the funnel: the moment of brand discovery is migrating from the open web to the retailer's own app, where the seller controls both the shelf and the advertisement.
