Zepto files for a $1 billion IPO, and its prospectus shows how expensive ten-minute delivery really is

On June 8, Zepto filed an updated draft prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Board of India for an initial public offering of about ₹8,010 crore, with a July listing in view.

The filing shows annual transacting users rose 25 per cent to 4.79 crore as of March 31, with the company running 1,139 dark stores and 75 warehouses across India.

Most of the fresh proceeds go to physical scale rather than marketing: about ₹1,628 crore for new dark stores, ₹1,734 crore for lease rentals on existing ones, ₹1,324 crore for technology, and ₹520 crore for promotion.

A successful float would make Zepto the third quick commerce company to reach the public market, after Blinkit's parent Eternal and Swiggy's Instamart. The capital intensity in the document is the clearest signal yet that speed in this business is bought rather than earned.

Blinkit holds the quick commerce lead as Zepto overtakes Instamart on orders

In the March quarter, Blinkit processed about 273.9 million orders, well ahead of Zepto's 210 million and Swiggy Instamart's 112.6 million.

Zepto's move past Instamart on volume reorders the field just as it prepares to list, though Blinkit keeps a clear lead in both scale and profitability with a dark store network near 2,243 outlets.

Flipkart Minutes is the variable to watch, adding roughly 100 dark stores a month toward 1,200 by mid-year — a late entrant buying its way to parity on footprint.

Bain finds India's online shopper base nearing 300 million, led by Gen Z and smaller cities

Bain's How India Shops Online 2026 puts the country's e-retail shopper base at 290 to 300 million, roughly double the level of five years ago, with the market compounding at 19 to 21 per cent a year.

Growth is no longer a metro story. Tier 2 and smaller cities now account for about half of incremental orders, and Gen Z makes up 40 to 45 per cent of online shoppers.

For consumer brands the harder problem is distribution, not demographics — the next hundred million buyers are arriving from outside the cities that built the category.

Nestlé, Coca-Cola and Unilever quietly scale back sustainability pledges

Several consumer goods majors, among them Nestlé, Coca-Cola and Unilever, have softened or pushed back climate and plastic commitments set in earlier years.

An Ellen MacArthur Foundation review found the industry's 2025 plastic reduction targets are unlikely to be met, with recycled content and reuse goals slipping across signatories.

The retreat matters for India, where these companies are scaling fastest and where packaging waste rules are tightening rather than loosening.

AI assistants begin to reshape where retail demand starts

AI-referred traffic to United States retail sites rose about 805 per cent year-on-year over Black Friday 2025, and roughly 61 per cent of consumers now use AI tools for shopping research.

Such visitors convert at far higher rates than ordinary search traffic, and Etsy, Target and Walmart have all connected their catalogues to OpenAI, Google and Microsoft assistants.

The decision is moving upstream, into the chat window, before a shopper reaches a brand's own site — a shift Indian retailers are only starting to plan for.

Reliance Retail brings Fenty Beauty to India as the premium beauty land grab continues

Reliance Retail has launched Rihanna's Fenty Beauty in India, opening with a consumer pop-up at Mumbai's Phoenix Palladium before a wider rollout.

The move extends Reliance's strategy of importing global beauty labels to anchor its Tira and Sephora-style retail formats against a fast-growing premium segment.

India's beauty and personal care market is one of the few consumer categories where premiumisation is outrunning volume, which is why distribution rights to a marquee brand are worth the shelf space.

Coca-Cola named Tapaswee Chandele its global chief people officer — part of a broader leadership reshuffle at the company.
Zepto is weighing a pre-IPO placement of up to ₹1,602 crore — any proceeds would be deducted from the fresh issue size.
