India's beverage shelf becomes FMCG's fastest-growing aisle as coffee, RTD and no-sugar drinks outpace food

On June 10, the Nifty FMCG index was the day's top sectoral gainer, up 1.5 per cent, after a quarter in which beverages quietly became the sector's growth engine.

Nestlé India reported high double-digit growth in beverages, with Nescafé gaining share. Tata Consumer's coffee portfolio grew 20 per cent and its ready-to-drink line 23 per cent. Dabur's Real Activ juices grew 26 per cent, and its coconut water business more than doubled in the March quarter.

The shift runs deepest at Varun Beverages, where low and no-sugar products now account for nearly 63 per cent of consolidated sales volume.

ICICI Securities expects India's beverage market to grow from $17.2 billion in FY24 to $30 billion by FY30, a 9.7 per cent annual rate. For an index still down 13 per cent this calendar year, the drinks aisle is doing the heavy lifting.

Meta signs its first India data-centre deal: a 168 MW Reliance-built facility in Jamnagar

On June 10, Meta announced a partnership with Reliance Industries for a 168-megawatt AI-enabled data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat — its first built-to-suit capacity in India.

Reliance will design, build and operate the facility, supplying renewable power and network connectivity, with Meta holding options to scale. The site is expected to be ready within two years and will be cooled with desalinated seawater.

Meta is separately backing nearly 1 GW of renewable energy in India with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy. The relationship began with Meta's $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms in 2020; this deal moves it from apps into physical infrastructure.

Aditya Birla Group puts ₹4,730 crore more into Vodafone Idea, lifting its stake to 13 per cent

On June 12, the Aditya Birla Group said it will invest ₹4,730 crore in Vodafone Idea, raising its holding from 9.6 per cent to 13 per cent.

The funds are earmarked for network capex, loan repayment and competitiveness — a promoter group recommitting capital to a telco many investors had written off.

For consumer businesses the stake matters beyond telecom: tariff discipline and rural data pricing both depend on a third funded network staying in the market.

Jefferies opens coverage on Meesho with a Buy and a ₹225 target, roughly 34 per cent above market

On June 10, Jefferies initiated coverage on newly listed Meesho with a Buy rating and a ₹225 target price, implying about 34 per cent upside.

The broker forecasts 25 per cent annual growth in net merchandise value through FY30 and a 3 per cent adjusted EBITDA margin by then, built on Meesho's low-price, discovery-led model.

The stock rose about 5 per cent on heavy volume the same day, absorbing a ₹1,540 crore block deal triggered by pre-IPO lock-in expiry — early evidence the float can digest insider supply.

ICICI Securities called it one of the strongest quarters for staples and liquor companies, with food continuing to outgrow home and personal care. Managements guided for a better second half of FY27 despite a subpar monsoon outlook.

Paytm plans 4,000 hires as it rebuilds around AI, even as some existing roles are cut

Paytm plans to add about 4,000 employees as it expands AI-led products, while trimming some existing roles, according to a June 9 report.

The pattern reads as a workforce reshuffle rather than pure expansion — hiring concentrated in AI engineering and distribution, with automation absorbing routine functions.

Indian fintech headcount is splitting into two ends: senior AI talent on one side, feet-on-street sales on the other, and a thinning operational middle.
